Creepy Critters Judging is Underway
We’ve got a total of 37 entries for the fourth CSS Off contest.
We’re looking forward to giving feedback on all of the entries, as well as determining a winner. We want to be thorough, but we know the importance of getting feedback in a timely manner. We ask for your patience as we undertake this exciting effort.
We hope you enjoyed the challenge. Stay tuned!

I tried to get mine done on time, it didn’t happen, I was to busy with my site…
oops
This is just me but did anyone else feel that the critters (Pests to be on the lookout for) section needed to be in a list? I thought that was the best implementation of the design but thats my opinion. Anyone agree or disagree?
DEREK: Yeah, I put them in a DL. It will be interesting to see what other people did.
I was bummed when I remembered a couple things I forgot to polish up. Whoops.
A list makes perfect sense there. It is also somewhat redundant if you use heading tags. Remember: headers *are* list items.
Let’s look at the structure of the page.
Title: Creepy Critters - All Service Pest Pontrol
H1: Termite Swarm Map
H1: Want to learn more about protecting your home?
H2: Carpenter Ant Damage Assessment Seminar (Part 1)
H2: Spraying Pesticides on a Tree, why the Government Won’t Let Us.
H2: Carpenter Ant Damage Assessment Seminar (Part 2)
H1: Pests to be on the lookout for.
H2: Rats and Mice
H2: Ants
H2: Cockroaches
H2: Common Tree Sloth
H1: Satisfaction Guaranteed
H1: Contact Us
H2: Cleveland Office
H2: Phoenix Office
What we have here is an outline. An outline is by definition a list, and the headers are list items. Therefore, when I give each pest a h2 tag I am saying that they are in a list. It seems redundant to use list tags as well.
Of course, I did use list tags for the seminars, so I am not following my own logic there. I think I should have left them out. That really is the most logical thing to do.
Of course, that is just my opinion, and I am a pragmatic, good-natured standardista who won’t get mad if you disagree :)
The site did not keep my indents. :(
Please imagine that the above is properly indented in outline form.
Say, Derek, I just looked at your entry, and you don’t use either a list or header tags for the seminars. Was that a conscious choice, or an oversight?
Looking back, I would have left the headers and taken away the list markup in my submission.
Now that I look at my code again, I used a list for the pests too. Bummer, I have been arguing against my own design! I had better shut up now, but I still think the outline logic above works.
*Steps off soapbox* :)
I have also used a dl for the pests. Just 1 dl, not 4. And used top and left position to get the 4 colums efects whitout extra divs.
@Joseph
I didn’t use a list on the events because I wasn’t thinking about it. I didn’t have time to analyze all aspects of the design and make the best code I possibly can; got to pick your battles with the short time I guess. However, in hindsight the events would probably have work as a list. I still think the code I wrote is good though, and everyone I’m sure including myself could have done better and I don’t think anyone wrote a perfect submission for the contest.
If I could do it over again there are about three things I would for sure clean up.
See, the point of doing it in 24 hours is to show you that we naturally make mistakes and don’t aways think of the ‘correct’ way of doing things.
For all those people who say that every job like this is done in 4-6 hours your wrong. Thats only half of it. Take a step back and start stage 2… thats where the thinking part comes in!
@Chris
I agree. It is easy to slice up a design in record breaking time, but it’s much harder to do it right. The point of this contest was and is for personal growth in my opinion. You get an opportunity to learn even if you don’t win you still win as long as you figured out something new that you didn’t know before. For me that was the microformats. They weren’t difficult to learn just something I’m not usually to concerned with but now I have a firm grasp on them and feel better equipped for the future. Thats what it’s all about.
On a side note… Hows judging going guys, you running into some difficult decisions?
Hey folks. It’s great to see all the commentary. Also, sometimes there are choices as to what markup to use. There isn’t always a clear right answer. People end up interpreting elements differently, and many times that affects the markup.
As for judging, we determined a way to divide and conquer early on and we’re letting the judges have at. Honestly, though, we’re behind schedule. By this time, we had hoped to have it narrowed down to 3, but we aren’t there yet. Thanks for your patience! - Tony
No worries, I was just seeing where we were at, and you answered my question. No need to rush things, this is a for fun thing anyhow. It seems like you guys had a few more entries than before and had to accommodate for that so I understand if things are delayed a bit.
It seems things have slowed down around here. Kind of jumping ahead but when is the next CSS OFF going down?
