This contest lasts for 24 hours, starting from 1 minute past midnight of September 15 and lasting until September 16 same time, Central Time (as in Memphis, TN USA). There are a few differences you may notice.

Special Considerations for this Contest

The first thing you’ll notice is that we didn’t finish the comp. Actually, we did, then we lopped off the footer. When we make web sites in the real world, we often have to fill in the blanks to account for something a designer didn’t consider. So as part of this contest, we’re asking you to finish the page.

Second, you’ll notice that this comp is more of a design challenge. Do your best to stay true to the comp, but don’t be afraid to push back at the designer and provide something that looks just as good, but may be a little different.

Finally, just for fun, feel free to replace the books we’ve provided (some of JD’s favorites) with some books that have inspired you. You can even copy some real reviews into the content, and link them up to your favorite online book store. This is just a way for us to share little bit about ourselves with the world at large.

During the contest

  • If you have questions, we don’t have answers.
  • We won’t help you.
  • You can help each other if you want.
  • Have fun!

Submitting your entry

  • Send the entry to cssoff@gmail.com before the deadline
  • Include the word “wikinetic” in the subject
  • In the body, include your name(s), any notes we should be aware of when judging, and in case you win, your contact information (if your originating email address isn’t good enough).
  • Attach a single zip file of your html/css/images/et cetera
  • Optional: Include winner information (see If You Win below).

We’re going by the date/time stamp on Gmail, and we’re strict — if it’s one second over the deadline, we’re not counting it.

After the contest

We’ve got a whole new panel of judges. Expect results within two weeks.

If you win

If you win, we’ll notify you by email, and we’d like to feature you on our site, including:

  • short bio about you
  • where you’re from
  • what site you want to promote
  • a picture of yourself
  • what reward you’ve chosen ($30 cash vs. $50 charitable donation); if charitable donation, which charity.
  • yada yada yada

If you have the time, feel free to attach this information to your entry email, but this is not at all required.

Commentary

  1. Hi,

Previous formula was better (for me). I am webdeveloper not graphician. I can “cut the project” - not design it.
It is good idea for a new contest. IMO previous formula shoud be back in future.

    With regards
    mInIq

  2. Working on it. Woop-de-doo!

  3. I’d send this straight back to the designer and ask him to finish his mockup, use vector shapes aligned to the pixel grid, and send me the logo in vector format
    .
Last CSSOff contest I was like, shit I’m going to participate next time, this looks like fun, but I’m passing this one.

  4. Done (or something like that).
    Sent.

    You’re evil CSS OFF guys…

  5. Done, and I was pretty happy with myself until I remembered IE6. I tried to plug the holes I saw with BrowserShots, but I don’t know how well I did. No way to find out right away.

Anyway, here is my entry, submitted 4 minutes before the deadline.

Several people have stated that they liked the other contests better; personally, I enjoyed the creative licence that this one allowed for. I’m excited to see what you all have done.

  6. Here is my pitiful attempt at creative license. ugh…

    enjoy ;)

  7. Great contest! Coming up with new content was a bit of a challenge, but I went ahead with it anyway.

Right before I submitted my entry I looked at my clock and saw it was 12:58 am. I looked at the CSS Off clock and it still said 2 minutes till the deadline. Then I remembered that CSS Off was on CST.

    Whew!

I had a blast. Can’t wait for the next one! Now its time for sleep.

  8. Submitted my entry. Turned out neat, although I didn’t add much of my own content, just a teensy footer. I hope that won’t cost me the win.
