CSS Off

The Contest

  • Convert a .psd into HTML making use of web standards, in 24 hours or less. Think SimpleQuiz, except it's the final exam.

The Mission

  • To actively engage the web community in web standards with an emphasis on valid, semantic markup
  • To emphasize good web design as an integral part of the development process
  • To use the contest as an opportunity to teach

Next Contest is July 14, 2007

At one minute past midnight (12:01 am), CST, July 14, a .psd (and .png) will be available for download in .zip format on this page. You’ll have 24 hours to send your zipped entry to cssoff@gmail.com.

As with last time, the winner of this contest gets to pick between $30 in cash or a $50 donation to a charity of their choosing. Again, we’ll feature you and your site when we discuss your winning entry.

  11. We’ve had a lot of requests for the xcf file format. And we hear you. But for now, we’re not going to provide it. But don’t be sad, we have three (we think) good reasons for this:

    1) First, and most obvious, neither one of us is familiar with xcf, we don’t use it, and we don’t have time to be exporting and quality-checking more than one or two formats

    2) The latest release of The Gimp is perfectly capable of opening layered psd files — we know this because we tried it ourselves

    3)And also, when we release the psd and png, it’s perfectly acceptable for our contestants to open the files we provide, convert to whatever format they want, and post a comment on the CSS Off site with a link to download the file from their own servers.

    We hope that helps. One of our goals with CSS Off is to help you help yourselves (as well as each other) when it comes to web design. You may not always be given the format you desire to work in, but there is always a way to figure it out.

    By the way, good luck on the next contest — a little birdie told us it’s going to be a little different than the first one!
